What is Dunamis Power? - Acts 1:8: "But you will receive power (dunamis) when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..." - Romans 1:16: The Gospel itself is called the "power (dunamis) of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes." - Ephesians 3:20: Describes God working according to the "power (dunamis) that is at work within us." How is a Christian to Use Dunamis Power? Dunamis (δύναμις) is the ancient Greek word for power, inherent ability, strength, or miraculous force. It is the root word from which modern terms like dynamite, dynamo, and dynamic originate. In the New Testament, dunamis refers specifically to divine power—the supernatural capacity of God operating in and through a believer. Unlike human authority or physical effort, dunamis is supernatural power imparted by the Holy Spirit to accomplish what human ability alone cannot. Scripture outlines clear guidelines on how believers are called to steward and exercise this Holy Spirit-imparted power: 1. To Be a Bold Witness for Christ Dunamis is given primarily for mission and testimony. It provides divine boldness, clarity, and conviction to proclaim the Gospel across cultural, social, and spiritual barriers (Acts 1:8, 2 Timothy 1:7). 2. To Overcome Sin and Live Righteously Human willpower frequently fails against systemic sin and internal weakness. Dunamis supplies the spiritual capability to break free from destructive patterns, live holy lives, and bear the fruit of the Spirit (2 Peter 1:3, Galatians 5:16). 3. To Serve and Build Up the Church God distributes spiritual gifts (charismata) driven by His dunamis power to serve others. Believers are commanded to use these capacities for the edification of the Church rather than personal gain or pride (1 Corinthians 12:4-11, 1 Peter 4:10-11). 4. To Engage in Spiritual Warfare and Deliverance The Christian life operates within a spiritual reality. Dunamis empowers believers to stand firm against spiritual adversary, pray with divine authority, and minister freedom and healing to those bound by darkness (Luke 10:19, Ephesians 6:10-18). 5. Operating in Humility and Love Dunamis power is never meant to be displayed as a show of force, personal superiority, or self-aggrandizement. Without sacrificial love, spiritual power is rendered meaningless (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). It is intended to be exercised in total dependence on God, carrying out His assignment with Christlike humility.
