Open in the Worship LibraryAbout this bible study
2 Kings 4 tells the story of four distinct miracles performed by the prophet Elisha, showing God's compassion and provision for ordinary people in deep need
1. The Multiplied Oil for the Widow (Verses 1–7)
The Need: A poor widow faced a ruthless creditor who was coming to take her two sons as slaves to pay off her late husband's debts.
The Miracle: Elisha told her to gather empty jars from all her neighbors. With just a tiny flask of oil left in her house, she began to pour it into the borrowed containers. The oil kept flowing and miraculously multiplied until every single jar was full.
The Result: Elisha told her to sell the oil, pay her debt, and use the remaining money to live on with her sons
2. The Promise and Birth of a Son to the Shunammite Woman (Verses 8–17)
The Need: A prominent and hospitable woman in Shunem cared for Elisha whenever he traveled through her town. Elisha wanted to repay her kindness, but she was older and her husband was advanced in age, and they had no children.
The Miracle: Elisha prophesied that by that exact time the following year, she would hold a son in her arms. The promise came true, and she gave birth to a baby boy.
3. Raising the Shunammite’s Son from the Dead (Verses 18–37)
The Need: Years later, the Shunammite woman's growing son suffered a sudden, severe head pain while out in the fields with his father. He was carried home to his mother, and he died on her lap.
The Miracle:
The grieving mother rushed to find Elisha. Elisha came to the house, went into the room alone, and prayed intensely. He lay on top of the boy—mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. The boy's body grew warm.
After Elisha walked back and forth and bent over him a second time, the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes back to life.
4. Purifying the Poisoned Stew and Multiplying the Bread (Verses 38–44)
The Need: During a time of severe famine, a group of prophets was gathering to eat. Someone accidentally put wild, poisonous gourds into a large cooking pot, causing the men to cry out, "O man of God, there is death in the pot!"
Right after, a man brought a small offering of just 20 barley loaves of bread and some fresh grain to feed a hungry crowd of 100 men.
The Miracle:
Elisha threw some flour into the stew, instantly neutralizing the poison so everyone could eat safely.
Elisha told his servant to feed the 100 hungry prophets with the tiny offering of 20 small loaves. The modest amount of food multiplied in their hands, and everyone ate their fill with food left over, fulfilling the word of the Lord.
